The screening program started in January 2019 by the first phase with a sample of 20 thousand people aged 50 to 75 selected by health insurance companies.
Health insurance companies send their insured persons a simple fecal occult blood test (bleeding that is hidden, invisible to naked eye) which they hand over to their general practitioner who assesses it.
Men and women above 50 are entitled to this test once in two years. If the result is positive, the patient should undergo a colonoscopy in order to determine the cause of bleeding.
